Bloody clashes in Al-Suwayda, 37 people killed as army sends reinforcements

Al-Suwayda Province: The Syrian Ministry of Defence has deployed large military convoys to Al-Suwayda, including various weapons and dozens of soldiers, to reinforce security checkpoints after they came under attack. Some of them already involved in the fighting against Druze gunmen in Al-Suwayda countryside.

The death toll from armed clashes and exchange shelling in Al-Maqous neighbourhood, east of Al-Suwayda city, and other areas of the has risen to 37, including two children, 27 Druze including the two children and 10 Bedouins, in addition to nearly 50 wounded, including children and others in critical condition.

Earlier SOHR reported that The Education administration in Al-Suwayda postponed tomorrow’s scheduled high school religious exam, saying that a new date will be announced later, due to the deadly clashes in the province.

Later, most residents of Al-Tayrah village in Al-Suwayda countryside fled towards Al-Mazra’ah and Al-Suwayda city, after armed groups entered the outskirts of the village and set fire to several homes, while some local groups remained inside Al-Tayrah to defend the area against attacks.

According to SOHR sources, Al-Sumay’ and Al-Mazra’ah towns were also targeted with several shells, while heavy clashes erupted in the outskirts of Labin and Haran, as local factions on the frontlines continue to defend the attacks.

SOHR activists reported that armed groups from Horan sent military reinforcements today towards the outskirts of Al-Suwayda city, to support Bedouin tribal fighters engaged in clashes with security forces at several points on the city’s edges.

According to SOHR activists, a police checkpoint between Barak town and the Damascus–Al-Suwayda highway came under armed attack, with an exchange of fire between security forces and the attackers. Mortar shells fired by the gunmen also struck areas around Al-Sourah Al-Kabirah as they advanced toward the checkpoint.

According to SOHR sources, dozens of gunmen from Daraa countryside moved in vehicles towards the northern and western Al-Suwayda countryside, heading to the areas of ongoing clashes, amid anticipation of escalating confrontations in the coming hours, especially after deaths and injuries were reported during the attacks earlier today.
