Erling Haaland wins PFA Player of the Year award to crown stellar first Man City season

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has been named as the PFA's Player of the Year in recognition of his stunning maiden season with the Premier League champions

Erling Haaland completed a clean sweep of awards after his record-breaking season for Manchester City.

Haaland was voted the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year after scoring 52 goals as City won a historic Treble. That comes on top of the City striker already being crowned the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in May.

Haaland scored 36 goals to help City win the Premier League title, also won the FA Cup and lifted the Champions League trophy in June.

It will go down as one of the most memorable debut seasons ever seen in English football and the Norway star has rightly won the individual awards to match.

The new-look PFA awards were convenient for Haaland as they were held in Manchester rather than the tradition of being staged in London.

Haaland, 23, was on the red carpet event which also ditched the tradition of being an end-of-season dinner in favour of a modern awards night in August at the Lowry Hotel.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka won the Young Player of the Year award after his unforgettable season for the Gunners and also England. Saka, 21, scored 22 goals for club and country last season, starred for England at the World Cup and was the driving force behind Arsenal’s title challenge.

Meanwhile, the divisional awards went to Chuba Akpom who enjoyed a brilliant season last year at Middlesbrough which led to his move from the Championship to Ajax. Ipswich Town’s Conor Chaplin won the League One Player of the Year and Bradford’s Andy Cook got the League Two gong.

The Premier League team of the year was: Ramsdale; Trippier, Stones, Dias, Saliba; de Bruyne, Rodri, Odegaard; Saka, Haaland, Kane.
