Sevilla prevails in Europa League final over Roma

Sevilla lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy for the fifth time in 10 seasons after beating AS Roma in a penalty shootout to win Wednesday’s final in Budapest.

The Spanish side came from behind at the Puskas Arena, where a 55th-minute Gianluca Mancini own goal cancelled out Paulo Dybala’s first-half opener.

With the score tied at 1-1 following 120 minutes of play, the final was decided from 12 yards.

Sevilla prevailed 4-1 in the shootout after Mancini and Roger Ibanez both failed to convert their spot-kicks.

Right-back Gonzalo Montiel, who scored in another shootout to help Argentina beat France in last year’s World Cup final, struck the winning kick for Sevilla amid some controversy.

Montiel’s initial effort had been saved by Rui Patricio but a VAR review found that the Roma keeper had come too far off his line and a retake was awarded.
