Tunisia: The charges against Rached Ghannouchi punished with death

Tunisia: Rached Ghannouchi, Speaker of the dissolved Tunisian Parliament, and Tariq Al-Fiti, Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, will appear today (Tuesday) before the Public Prosecution at the Court of First Instance in the Tunisian capital, on charges of conspiring against state security, against the background of a hypothetical session held by Parliament last Wednesday, despite the decision of the President Republic, Kais Saied, freezing the work of the legislature since the summer of last year.

Samir Dilou, the resigned leader of the “Ennahda” movement led by Ghannouchi, said that the accusations made against Rached Ghannouchi following the organization of a plenary session in March 30.

Remembering that several deputies have been invoked by the security forces, Samir Dilou informed that the parliamentary representatives have attached themselves to article 68 of the Constitution, the number of parliamentarians concerned with prosecution reached 121, noting that they have been referred to investigation under Chapter 72 of the Criminal Code, which states that “the perpetrator of any assault shall be punished with death.” It aims to change the state’s body, or to make the population attack each other with weapons, and to stir up commotion, murder and looting in Tunisian soil.”

During a press conference held by the “National Committee for the Defense of People’s Representatives” in the Tunisian capital, Delo said that the accused deputies are not afraid of the death sentence that could be imposed on them because of the accusations against them. He also spoke of some people attacking judges and threatening to physically liquidate them. He indicated that they would not exert equal pressure on the judges; Because they believe in the justice of their cause and in themselves, as he put it.

Meanwhile, Hamma Hammami, head of the left-wing Labor Party, said that it was “important to get rid of the (Ennahda) movement, and those who ruled with it over the past years,” and described the movement as the “New Assembly (the Constitutional Rally) party because it failed to resolve the outstanding issues. Since the era of (former president Zine El Abidine) Ben Ali; Especially the eradication of poverty and unemployment, and the alleviation of regional disparities.
