UNRWA: Half a Million Palestinians Trapped in Gaza City Within 8 km²

UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna said in remarks published on the agency’s official X account that the situation has reached extreme levels of overcrowding and displacement.

In Gaza City, around half a million Palestinians remain besieged in less than 8 km²,” Abu Hasna said.

The UNRWA spokesperson stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.

He added that in southern Gaza, where Israel has urged civilians to evacuate, conditions are even more alarming: 70,000 people are now crammed into every square kilometer, leaving no room to set up even a single tent. “Tens of thousands of families are left without shelter on the streets,” he said, warning that famine has now spread with displaced people from Gaza City to central and southern areas.

The warning comes after the Global Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) initiative declared famine in Gaza City on 22 August, with projections that it would extend to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.
