The 29-year-old Egypt forward, signed for £36million from Roma in 2017, just over 18 months to run on his existing deal at Liverpool.

He has been in talks over an extension for some time but no agreement has been reached, giving hope to potential suitors such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Salah says he’s happy to stay put on Merseyside but wants his wage to reflect his standing as arguably the best player in the world at the moment.

Mohamed Salah contract: What’s the latest?

Salah is said to be demanding £400,000-a-week to sign a contract extension at Liverpool.

The Telegraph reported that the forward is willing to sign fresh terms but only if he can double his current wage and become the Premier League’s top earner.

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne is currently the highest paid player in England.

The Athletic has claimed that despite concerns over the length of time taken during negotiations, it is Salah’s ‘preference to remain’ at Anfield.

Liverpool have announced extensions for Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But Salah, who is the joint-second highest earner at the club according to Spotrac, is still yet to ink fresh terms due to apparent frustrations at how easily City made De Bruyne the Premier League’s most-paid player.

It is claimed that ‘Salah feels as though he is yet to reach his prime’ and the former Roma star is an outstanding professional, capable of playing well into his 30s.

The sticking point for Liverpool is that they are ‘reluctant to pay what he feels he is worth’ due to the precedent it would set in changing the club’s wage structure.

And according to The Times, ‘negotiations have reached a stalemate’ with further talks expected later in the season.

Mohamed Salah contract: What’s been said?

“I said it several times, if the decision is up to me, I want to stay in Liverpool,” said Salah.

“But the decision is in the hands of the management and they have to solve this issue.

“There is no problem but we have to reach an agreement for the contract. It’s up to them.

“Your financial value shows how much the club appreciates you and that they are ready to do anything for you to stay, but the decision itself is not based on those financial matters only.

“There are things like the ambition of the team and the coach and what he wants to do with the team and the players he wants. These are all important points when making the decision.”

Speaking ahead the 5-0 thrashing of Manchester United, in which he scored a hat-trick, Salah told Sky Sports: “If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can’t say much about that – it’s not in my hands.

“It depends on what the club want, not on me.

“At the moment I can’t see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad. It’s hard, I don’t want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad.

“At the moment I don’t see myself playing against Liverpool but let’s see what will happen in the future.”

And ahead of Liverpool’s game against Tottenham, Klopp revealed he was positive about negotiations.

“We are in really good conversations,” Klopp told Sky Sports News.

“I want it to happen, but when? I couldn’t care less.”
