Over 30 dead migrants found in Italy Southwestern Coast

The number of victims increase after a shipwreck occurred off Italy's southwestern coast near Calabria, reported on Sunday.

More than 30 illegal immigrants were found dead and 50 others were rescued after a shipwreck took place off Italy’s southwestern coast near Calabria, media reported on Sunday.

The number of victims is still increasing as the search and rescue operations are still ongoing. More than 100 passengers boarded the ship, according to our reporters.

Preliminary data shows that the migrants are from Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. 

In total, over 67,000 people arrived in the Apennines via the Mediterranean last year, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 34,000 migrants have already arrived in the country by sea, in comparison with 25,500 during the same period last year. 

Hundreds of other illegal immigrants are still arriving in Italy.
